Reinfeld the carp-town.
image author: Rüdiger Poweleit In the district's north is the town of Reinbek (Holstein) situated. It can be reached directly over the motorway Hamburg/Lübeck. The town can also easily reached by train and has a lovely station. Cistercian monks, settled here since 1186, dammed the little river Heilsau and started to create fish-lakes. The biggest, the Herren-lake, has an area of ca. 60ha. One can walk around it on a lovely path. A nature swimming place with a sandy beach is ideal for recreation during the summer months.
The town carries the by-name of carp-town. On the harvest weekend the carp season starts with the fishing at the Herren-lake. This event attracts of course many visitors from near and far. The season lasts till Easter. During this time the restaurants are very busy. Gourmets from all over North-Germany mostly enjoy the town's heraldic animal as 'carp au bleu'.

The town is also known through the poet and lyric Matthias Claudius. He was born on 18.August 1740 in Reinfeld as son of a pastor of today's Mathias-Claudius-Church. Apart from many other works the 'evening song' with the lines: Der Mond ist aufgegangen....... .(the moon has risen) is by him.
Matthias Claudius worked also as a publisher in Hamburg. One of the first German-speaking newspaper the Wandsbeker Bote became known beyond Hamburg's border under his responsibility.

Visitors shouldn't miss the in 1907 build Art-Nouveau guildhall. In front of the guildhall stands an old patch pump, which supplied the town in the past with water.
A visit to the local museum makes an insight into the town's history possible.
Reinfeld is a state-approved recreation area. The surrounding charming Travel landscape bestowed the town the title 'pearl of the district Stormarn'. The countryside can be discovered on many paths. In the state-forest Reinfeld is a often visited Megalith grave situated. At the Neuhöfer Pond starts the 111km long Stormarner hiking path. It leads over Bad Oldesloe to Reinbek. A trip into the neighbouring community Zarpen is awarded with a church.
